March 2008

From this month I'm down-grading this site, and updates will be even less regular on here than they have been. This is because other sites are easier to update and navigate, and because of some other exciting new developments. But until all these are in place this site will be used purely as a place holder.

So, if you are after information about shows or publications, up to date biog information, want to catch up on miscellaneous poetry related blogs, then please pop over to www.myspace.com/nathanpenlington.

If you are interested in contacting Nathan about organising a spoken word event or festival, want to book him to perform at an event, or if you want press information or photos you can contact him directly at info(at)shortfuse(dot)co(dot)uk.

Shortfuse - London's only weekly fusion of stand-up poetry, performance comedy, and spokenword - is still running a regular Thursday event - you can find information at: www.20six.co.uk/shortfuse, www.myspace.com/shortfuse or you can find the shortfuse group on Facebook.

January 2008

Things have slowed down a little bit over the last few months as I have been quite ill. But it is the start of a new year, and fingers crossed, I'm on my way to being back at 100%.

You can still keep up to date with things over at www.myspace.com/nathanpenlington - which is updated with blogs, tracks, poems etc regularly.

The Fix magazine is going from strength to strength despite the hard work of Harry Deansway, and the next issue is set to see an increase in pages and content. The poetry section in particular will now have regular articles, reviews and interviews alongside the usual selection of poems. You can pick up your copy FREE at the usual outlets - see www.thefixonline.com for full information.

Roadkill on the digital highway has been the working title for a series of graphic poems I have been working on over the pase few years. They are being gathered together and a new book is on the horizon, and should be finished and back from the printers in the next two months.

August 2007

This year, for the first time in five years, I am taking a break from the Edinburgh Fringe. The reason? I'm contentrating on a festival closer to home (well, just outside my front door) and directing Write to Ignite.

Write to Ignite
, Hackney Word Festival 2007, is a diverse celebration of the word in all its glorious forms from the best of Hackney's word artists. Expect amazing words in strange places and strange words in amazing places - including Hackney City Farm and The Clown Museum.
This year, Write to Ignite has crowned Michael Rosen Hackney’s Poet Laureate. He will be making many appearances throughout the festival, including the Poetry Street Party on the 7th September, a family workshop on 15th September, and culminating in a performance of specially commissioned poems about Hackney Streets performed in The Round Chapel on 26th September.
Throughout Write to Ignite, one street in Hackney will receive a poetic makeover, and be transformed into Poetry Street. Wander down to Chatsworth Road, E5, and expect to see poems where you wouldn’t expect them - cafes, shops, homes, waiting rooms, pavements and parks will all be lyrically pampered.
Other highlights include readings, performances, discussions and workshops from John Hegley, Scroobius Pip, Iain Sinclair, Tim Wells, Annie Freud, Simon Munnery, Gwyneth Herbert, Martin White, Hugo Williams, Baden Prince, Tim Turnbull, Adisa and Stewart Lee and many, many more.
The festival will culminate in an all day event on the 29th September in Hoxton Hall – with stalls featuring independent publishers and alternative magazines, a free Book Swap, readings from local authors, a poetry open mic, and a show that explores contemporary performance poetry as a musical-hall tradition: “The poet aspires to the condition of the music-hall comedian”, said  T.S. Eliot, and we plane to test that statement.
Write to Ignite runs from 3rd – 29th September 2007 in venues throughout Hackney.

JUNE 2007

As always details for live gigs can be found at www.myspace.com/nathanpenlington

<<<<<>>>>>

A few exciting things have tumbled through my door in the last week, including two new magazines:

The Fix - June 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The may issue of The Fix looks even better than the previous issues and includes a feature article by the fantastic poet AF Harrold*, a full page short story by Guy Jackson, as well as the regular poetry section - which this month includes some great work by Penny Broadhurst, Vic Lambrusco, S.P. Howarth, James McKay, Liz Bentley, Gareth Jones, plus my 'sycophantic bureaucratic romantic'.

As always you can pick up a copy FREE at Fopp stores across the country, or if you are coming to Shortfuse you can always get a copy direct from me. For full info visit: www.thefixonline.com

The Quiet Feather - Issue 9

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Also landing in my hall was the latest copy of Quiet Feather. The theme for Issue 9 is Light - and the interpretation of this theme is as broad as the range of forms: from essays to line drawings, from photographs to short stories, from comics to poetry - it is here my 'Light Trespass' sees print for the first time. This is definitely one of the best literary magazine I have seen for a long time - intelligent without being pretentious, artistic without being pedantic. It covers a lot of ground within its fifty pages, and covers it with gentle and sympathetic editorial sense.

Get your copy here: www.thequietfeather.com and make friends with the magazine here: www.myspace.com/thequietfeather

Write to Ignite

The other exciting news is that I have been appointed Director of Write to Ignite - Hackney Word Festival 2007. The festival will take place throughout September in a wide variety of venues across the borough of Hackney. Expect amazing words in strange places and strange words in amazing places. Bars, galleries, book shops, libraries, theatres, cafés, streets, and some very special locations will be the stage for a diverse range of Hackney's best word artists. This festival has something for everyone of all ages.

I have already lined-up some unexpected events that will feature some of the best poets and performers working in the UK. They will have to remain hush-hush for a couple of weeks until the whole programme of events is confirmed in full...but in the meantime, once again, come and make friends: www.myspace.com/writetoignite or to join our mailing list send an email to writetoignite@gmail.com. And I promise you'll be first to know the full festival line-up.

*in a side note, AF Harrold will be performing at Shortfuse on July 19th alongside Stewart Lee - it will be our last show of the season, so come and join us for what promises to be an unmissable event. See www.20six.co.uk/shortfuse for full information.

April was a busy month, some days of which resulted in some new recordings which will be uploaded in the coming weeks onto myspace.

The new Fix Magazine is out now. And what a great looking issue it is too. Sir Jimmy is winking out at me from the cover as I type this. Something very, very sinister about that wink. Or maybe it is the hair. Or perhaps it is the combination of the two.

Feature guest of Issue Two is the lovely and brilliant Josie Long. And the poetry section this issue features Rhian Edwards, AF Harrold, Dorna Aslanzadeh, Jason King, Guy Jackson, plus the first publication of my 'Bardcode' poem.

So where can I get my hands on a copy? I hear you cry. Well, The Fix has now gone nationwide, and can be picked up in all branches of FOPP, The Bongo Club in Edinburgh, The Komedia in Brighton, comedy venues across London, and of course at SHORTFUSE or from me directly at gigs.

Check out www.thefixonline.com for full info.

March 2007

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I have in my hands, hot of the press, the brand new issue of the UK's new monthly comedy magazine The Fix. Weighing in at 32 glossy full colour pages, it has TV muppet of the moment Russell Brand on the front cover - but don't let that put you off - it has features written by Book Club impresario Robin Ince, an article on The Mighty Boosh, and the regular degenerate centrefold.

As Editor of the poetry section I have included some fine pieces from Tim Turnbull, Tim Wells, Dean Wilson, Tamsin Kendrick and Paul MacJoyce.

And where can you get your hands on this fine piece of contemporary comedic literature I hear you ask? Various comedy venues around London, certain Virgin Megastores, at London's only weekly spokenword fusion night SHORTFUSE (of course), and if you send me a large stamped addressed envelope I will be happy to stick one in the post. Just send me a message and I'll give you the address to send it to.

<<<<<>>>>>

On Monday night I was asked to record as part of BBC Radio 4's new series of 28 acts in 28 minutes. Sixty seconds to define your style, cold – with no introduction, set-up or explanation. Sixty seconds that begin from when you start speaking, a warning light at forty-five seconds, and music that rises loudly over the last five seconds.

Waiting in the over heated dressing room with the twenty-seven other acts, the level of pre-gig anxiousness was unlike anything I've experienced, and as all performers were on a level footing, the tension was unifying in some way. Some of the friendly faces of other acts included the lovely Stuart Lee (who will be performing at SHORTFUSE again in July) and the fantastic Gavin Osborn (who last performed with us alongside Daniel Kitson, but hopefully will be down to perform tracks from his new album sometime soon). It was also good to get a chance to talk to Penny Broadhurst (look out for some of her work in a forthcoming issue of The Fix), Jeff Innocent, Jarlath Regan and Mara Carlyle.

I'd decided to perform an edited version of my poem 'The Heat Ray' – because: A) I hoped that it would illustrate an aspect of my general style; B) It is a self contained narrative; C) It has its own introduction built in – the opening Richard Burton speech from Jeff Wayne's Musical version of War of the Worlds.

Twenty-third on the list, just after Stephen K Amos, I watch some acts receive the dreaded cut off for running over sixty seconds. I edit a couple more lines out and run through the poem a couple more times, hoping I pace it right – not too fast to blur the words, and not too slow to miss off the last couple of lines. In a blink I'm on, barely time to even acknowledge the presence of the 200 strong audience, and it is all over. Unusually for a radio show recording there are no re-takes, and the 28 of us head for the bar and stay there for a lot longer than 28 minutes.

And I awake with the realisation that, technically, I was Richard Burton in Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of The Worlds on BBC Radio 4 last night. As a small boy pretending Rhyl lampposts were Martian Tripods that thought would have been beyond imagining.

The new series of 28 acts in 28 minutes is scheduled for broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May.
